Draft for Ian to check (28 October 2026). Written from his existing pages and notes. Still to confirm:
- How quickly you're happy to promise a reply (left as a gap)
- Whether you want to name anyone who has tested the site with assistive technology
- The known problems list, once older articles have been checked
I want everyone to be able to read, watch, listen to and use this website, whatever their eyesight, hearing, movement or way of thinking. This statement explains how well it does that, and what to do if something gets in your way.
The standard I'm aiming for
The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the international standard for accessible websites. It also aims for plain English throughout, because clear writing helps everyone.
What you can do on this site
The accessibility menu (the person icon at the top of every page) lets you:
- choose light, dark or high-contrast colours
- make the text larger
- switch to an easier-to-read font, Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, designed for readers with low vision
- add more space between lines and letters
- underline every link
- turn on a reading guide that follows your pointer
- have the page read aloud
- stop all movement and animation
Your choices are saved on your own device only.
You can also:
- use the whole site with a keyboard alone, with a clear outline showing where you are
- skip straight to the main content with the first Tab press
- use the site with JavaScript switched off; the scripts only add extras
- zoom in to 400% without losing anything off the side of the screen
- read every podcast episode as a full transcript
What isn't perfect yet
I'm working through more than a decade of older articles, so some things aren't right yet:
- Some older images don't have good descriptions (alt text) for screen readers.
- Some older videos don't have captions I've checked by hand.
- Podcast transcripts are made automatically, so they contain mistakes.
- Embedded players from other companies, such as YouTube, are only as accessible as those companies make them.
If any of these affects you, tell me and I'll fix that piece first.
Tell me about a problem
If something on this site is hard to use, please get in touch and tell me the page and what happened. I'll reply within [number] working days, and if I can't fix it straight away I'll get you the information another way.
If you're not happy with my response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) at equalityadvisoryservice.com.
How this was checked
This statement was written on 28 October 2026 for the new version of the site, which is still being tested. It is based on checks of every page type: automatic testing of the code, keyboard-only use, colour contrast checks, checks at phone width, and checks with JavaScript switched off.
